Flint's Bishop International Airport Dedicates the "Mayor James A. Sharp, Jr. Conference Room" Today at 11:30am

February 23, 2007

(Flint, Michigan) Bishop International Airport Authority is dedicating its new conference room, located on the second floor above Baggage Claim, to previous City of Flint Mayor James A. Sharp, Jr. at 11:30am today. In attendance will be almost 75 people who played a part in the success of creating the Airport Authority.

Michael P. Manley, Bishop International Airport Authority Chairperson, stated: "As in any good endeavor, there are so many good people who were a part of making the Airport Authority possible that it would be impossible to mention everyone. We had supporters like the Friends of Aviation, to hundreds of politicians, community members and activists.

Having acknowledged that, the key advances at Bishop started with Sharp's vision of the future economic development needs of Genesee County. He became a major proponent of the creation of the Bishop International Airport Authority. Once created, he charged the Authority with the airport's future growth."

Below are a few examples of the amazing increases at Bishop International Airport since the year the Authority was created in 1987:

  • In 1987, when the Authority was first created, Bishop International Airport handled a total of 222,628 passengers. In 2006, the facility handled a total of one million, sixty two thousand, seven hundred and twenty eight (1,062,728) passengers, over a 375% increase.
  • Back in 1987, those two hundred thousand plus passengers made us the 6th busiest airport in Michigan. Since then, we have surpassed Kalamazoo, Saginaw and Lansing to become the 3rd busiest airport in the state—behind Grand Rapids and Detroit.
  • The old terminal building had just a few hundred parking spaces to handle all of our outgoing passengers; today the facility has 4,200 public parking spaces.
  • In 1987, the facility handled 356,293 pounds of freight. In 2006 thirty two million, six hundred and seventy thousand, eight hundred and forty five (32,670,845) pounds of freight moved through the airport, an increase of over 9,000%.
  • In 1987 we had a new $1.6 million dollar cargo ramp under construction. Today, we are embarking on a 5 year, $33 million dollar intermodal cargo expansion that will have a tremendous economic impact on Genesee County for decades to come.

Speaking today will be:

  • Michael P. Manley, Bishop International Airport Authority Chairperson
  • Congressman Dale E. Kildee
  • Rob Collier, former City Administrator under Mayor James A. Sharp, Jr.
  • Donald Williamson, current City of Flint Mayor
  • Jack Minore, former member of the 1987 City Council and the Airport Millage Campaign Committee
  • Daniel Kildee, Genesee County Treasurer
  • Former City of Flint Mayor, James A. Sharp, Jr.

Following the speakers and the plaque unveiling,
we will have an hour of networking and hors d'oeuvres.
